Rocks & Minerals

Well I'm not one to care for rocks and minerals, but when the subject comes up, my children need to be taught. This is one of those circumstances that everyone who is not a homeschooler, asks you about. "What do you do if you don't understand something." I smile and say, "I pray!" Which is so true and there has not been a time that God has not stepped in on time.
This time the prayer was answered in the past and present- by that I mean, the Lord had provided me with the right books for each child to learn the lesson on their level, some time last year. Then it was answered presently because I went to our state's museum website and saw they had exhibit on the very subject. So, I made it a date for a field trip. Well, the first Tuesday of every month is especially dedicated to home schoolers there!!!! Only $1 per student and the teacher is free!!! Perfect. Oh, and to top it off, they have just begun 1 hour workshops for homeschoolers on a different subject every month. Guess what this month's subject was??? ROCKS & MINERALS!!!!!  God is soooooooooooooooooooooooo good! He knew what I had need of even before I asked Him. My two older children went to the workshop and when they came out, they were telling me so much information! My son went around the museum telling what type of stone we were looking at and what type of stone it was. My daughter told me that they showed them how to do a streak test. I had read about this, but I didn't know exactly what they were talking about, but when she did it herself, she understood. A really good book for younger kids and I think my older liked it too, is "The Magic School Bus- Inside the Earth" Very helpful! Here are a few pics:

Oh, BTW, I don't know if you can see my children's shirts, but another mom shared the site with me and I LOVE them! They say,
"YES- I am homeschooled,
YES- I am socialized,
YES- I had class today!"
Boy, did that stop a lot of people in their tracks!
I got a lot of compliments- My mom purchased them for me because she liked them so much-Thanks Mom, I love you!

  1. God truly is Awesome! They look as if they had so much fun also. Your little one looks like he has a very humerous personality. He is too cute! Well all of your children are beautiful. May the Lord continue to Bless your family. Thank you for the heads up on the museum. This is our first year doing homeschooling and Weaving. I need to look to see what our museum offers. We have not looked into things like that yet. It looks like it really helped with the rocks & minerals section. What Weaver Volume are you using? I have Volume 1 and I believe we had rocks and minerals in Chapt 2, but don't feel we quite got it.

BTW, thank you so much for sharing the homeschool boutique with us. I love the T-Shirts!

    Blessings,

  2. Our kids love rocks/minerals and anything to do with it so we do alot of rock collecting/identifying...

How do you get all of your slides to work? I tried to put a photobucket slideshow on my site and I couldn't get it to work... probably because I'm on dial-up?!? It was still loading on your site for me too...

  3. I like the stuff you have on your blog. fun! I'm married to a geologist, so it was funny to hear your take on learning about rocks. Looks like a nice exhibit. But not as nice as those shirts!

  4. For some reason, I don't see a slideshow! But I could relate so much to your post. I'm not a rock and mineral person, either, but the oldest collects them. A couple of years back, we went a Rock and Gem show, which comes to our area each year. Save for a friend who talked to me the whole way through, I would have been bored to tears, but the kids loved it! They actually bought rocks--yes, that's right, they bought rocks--and wanted to participate in every activity. We do have to back up and let learning happen, and prayer is key to doing that. Thanks for sharing.
